Sally Field’s youngest son and her only child with her second husband, Alan Greisman. Over the years, Sam and his mother have formed a remarkably close bond, one that has been celebrated publicly and privately.
In a personal essay for PEOPLE in 2023, Sam opened up about his journey of coming out as gay and the unique dynamic he shares with his mother. “I’ve always been a momma’s boy — painfully, occasionally ashamedly so,” he wrote, humorously acknowledging their deep connection. Sam credited Field as his safe space while growing up, describing her as the constant anchor in his life.
Their bond has remained steadfast throughout Sam’s life, with many of his childhood memories tied to Sally’s career. He fondly recalls visiting film sets like the toy store in South Carolina where Forrest Gump was shot or their time in California during the making of Mrs. Doubtfire. Sally even adjusted her shooting schedule for Brothers & Sisters to ensure she could prioritize their relationship.
Sam and Sally have also united on causes close to their hearts. In 2019, they supported the Equality Act as part of HRC’s Americans for the Equality Act campaign. Years earlier, in 2012, Sam introduced his mom at the Ally for Equality Award ceremony, sharing how her unwavering support made his coming-out journey joyful and empowering. “When I came out, she didn’t even bat an eye. She was overjoyed,” he said during his speech. “Being gay was just one more thing she loved about me.”
Field, known for her humor and big heart, even made headlines in 2018 when she tried to set Sam up with his “Olympic crush,” Adam Rippon. Speaking about her youngest, she once said, “He was always Sam. Glorious, smart, funny, sweet Sam. And finally, at 20, he was able to stand up proudly and say, ‘I am a gay man.’ ”
Sam’s story and his relationship with Sally Field are a testament to unconditional love, acceptance, and a family bond that grows stronger with time.
